The labels of wines in amphora which can be tasted during the two days of the Convention will be those proposed by the 40 wine producers, guests of the event. Italy will be well represented from north to south with wines from Abruzzo, Emilia Romagna, Campania, Piedmont, Lombardy, Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto, Sardinia and of course from Tuscany. The International producers come from as far as the US, New Zealand, Australia and Georgia, together with a number of European wine producers, among which a high representative from France. Together they will contribute to make the technical comparisons of winemaking in amphorae even more stimulating…not to mention the taste of the wines themselves.

While waiting for the technical sheets of each wine that can be tasted during the two days at Impruneta, let’s have a look at the stylistic choice of winemaking in amphora by a few of the International wine producers who will be guests of “Terracotta and Wine 2016”. Let’s start with AmByth Estate from California, and Trofeo Estate from Australia.
The amphorae of both their properties come from the workshop of Artenova from Impruneta (Tuscany). Artenova is the first terracotta artisan in Italy to specialise in the production of terracotta jars explicitly for making wine. In Italy today they are leaders in the industry with an increasingly growing worldwide demand for their products.

AmByth Estate has 16 Terracotta jars in their cellars in Templeton California, between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Natural winemakers, Philip and Mary Hart, owners of AmByth Estate have been making wine in amphora since 2012. Terracotta responds fully to their production philosophy certified by Demeter as they have chosen a type of agriculture marked by purity and respect for the rhythms of nature. AmByth also participated in the 2014 edition of “Terracotta and Wine”.

Trofeo Estate has 90 terracotta jars in the cellar of the estate in Dromana, Australia owned by Jim Manolios. Currently, 60% of their wine production is in terracotta with the aim to reach 100%. Trofeo Estate also participated in the 2014 edition of “Terracotta and Wine” and is one of the first wine producers to have discovered the Artenova wine-jars.
Trofeo Estate is the largest producer of wine in amphora in the southern hemisphere. Read all about it on the Artenova Newsletter of January 2016
